Silva Nova – Restoring soil biology and soil functions to gain multiple benefits in new forests

چکیده
Afforestation is proposed as one of the most effective climate solutions for carbon sequestration. As a majority threatened species are linked to forests, afforestation can also contribute mitigate biodiversity crisis. There however caveat: agricultural legacy (high nutrient availability, altered soil biota structure and function) new forests constrains development forest-adapted species, affects tree growth stability, delays environmental benefits from afforestation. We hypothesize that inoculation former arable land with (including microbiome, fauna seeds/rhizomes understory vegetation) old along targeted mixtures will improve productivity more rapidly restore communities. This ultimately result in diverse, stable resilient multifunctional forests. test this hypothesis develop applied methods by: i) exploring benchmarking existing research Chronosequence platforms (chronosequences sites increasing distance other forests); ii) conducting experiments mesocosms measure seedling performance and, above- belowground linkages; iii) establishing field-scale afforestations short- long-term success on forest productivity, functioning at ecosystem scale; iv) incorporating landscape context into guidelines tools spatially explicit prioritization areas assisted dispersal. The aims resolve barriers successful restoration landscape-scale strategies optimize planning implementation green infrastructure; produce basic knowledge tree, vegetation, microbiome nexus its effect functions (N-retention, C-sequestration, methane uptake).

Restoring Soil Calcium Reverses Forest Decline
Forest decline in the northeastern United States has been linked to the effects of acid deposition on soil nutrients. To test this link, we added a calcium silicate mineral to a paired watershed at the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest, New Hampshire, in an amount designed to gradually replace the estimated amount of calcium lost as a result of human activity in the 20th Century (primarily beca...
متن کاملRapidly restoring biological soil crusts and ecosystem functions in a severely disturbed desert ecosystem.
Restoring biological soil crusts (biocrusts) in degraded drylands can contribute to recovery of ecosystem functions that have global implications, including erosion resistance and nutrient cycling. To examine techniques for restoring biocrusts, we conducted a replicated, factorial experiment on recently abandoned road surfaces by applying biocrust inoculation (salvaged and stored dry for two ye...
متن کاملSoil protists: a fertile frontier in soil biology research.
Protists include all eukaryotes except plants, fungi and animals. They are an essential, yet often forgotten, component of the soil microbiome. Method developments have now furthered our understanding of the real taxonomic and functional diversity of soil protists. They occupy key roles in microbial foodwebs as consumers of bacteria, fungi and other small eukaryotes. As parasites of plants, ani...
متن کاملSoil Carbon in the Forests of Russia
The 50% variation in the estimates of carbon (C) content in the forest soils of Russia at present is caused by confusion of terms and ignorance of the soil geographical representativeness in forests. The GIS-based analysis closes the gap to the estimate published earlier by Alexeyev and Birdsey (1994, p. 170). The average soil carbon density (SCD) for the 0.3 meter (m) layer of the forest soils...
